The Institute of Cartopology examines the role of maps in today's challenges.
Research
Many 21st-century challenges, like climate change and housing shortages, have spatial dimensions. Cartopology merges cartographic techniques with anthropological methods to better represent the complexity of these issues. By enriching maps, it offers a versatile approach to understanding and addressing our world’s challenges.
Under the name Dear Hunter, we practice cartopology throughout Europe. Follow us here!
Education
The Institute of Cartopology offers dynamic educational programs for all, from young adventurers to seasoned experts. With hands-on workshops and lectures, we explore mapping in unique locations—like the historic village of Vaals and nature reserves—turning surroundings into living classrooms for cartographers aged 8 to 88.
Whether it’s our map library, quality coffee or tea, a route, or a DIY expedition, there are plenty of reasons to stop by. You’ll find us halfway Mt. Vaals: Gemmenicherweg 36, Vaals (NL)
Consider our surroundings, do not come by car but by bus 350 (Aachen ↔ Maastricht), by bike or by foot.
“Kom verder!” Everything you need, halfway Mt. Vaals
A refuge in the true meaning of the word. It might not be that harsh, cold and snowy at this altitude but still: whether you’re walking, hiking or riding your bike up the Vaalserberg, Berghut Halverwege offers the perfect break and refreshment. We offer drinks and meals depending on the season and availability. It is also the location for lectures, talks and other small events celebrating the (im)possibilities of map-making, maps in general and the relationship of maps with our surroundings.

The beginning of a new midsummer ritual on the Vaalserberg: from sunrise to sunset, a day of stories, music, light, and togetherness, inspired by ancient mountain traditions. Together, we create a mythical symbol that makes our bond with the landscape visible, light it, and share a closing meal.
